THE EAGLE HAS LANDED

LIVERPOOL Director, Solon Papadopoulos, has landed a CINE Golden Eagle Award for the science and history series Warplane, made in conjunction with Granada Productions in Manchester, for the PBS network in the USA and National Geographic International.

Sol, together with fellow Warplane director and series producer, Tony Bulley, and editors Ivan Probert and Danny Ward, says he’s thrilled to have clinched the prestigious award. The team follow in the illustrious footsteps of previous CINE winners, such as Speilberg and legendary documentary-makers, the Maysles brothers.

CINE is internationally recognized for its highly acclaimed film competitions, which culminate every year in a gala awards event held in Washington, D.C. It has a wide following in the film and video industry nationally and internationally, drawing over 1,000 entries per year to its competitions, which have been taking place since 1957.

This side of the pond, Sol has also been nominated for a regional RTS (Royal Television Society) award for his Granada Editions documentary Making Mud, which followed two of the performer/writers from Under The Mud to the Cannes film festival.

The feature, which was supported by screen agency Northwest Vision and Media, has been gathering acclaim around the world. It has also just been accepted at three more film festivals - Salford, Galway and Hollywood!

“This is fantastic news for Sol and everyone connected with his production company, Hurricane Films,” says Alice Morrison, Chief Executive of Vision and Media, which works on behalf of the region’s TV, film, radio and digital content industries.

“After receiving its regional premiere in Liverpool earlier this year, Under The Mud has continued to be highly praised at film festivals around the world, so our hopes are high that it will continue to impress,” adds Alice.

Written by a group of young people from Liverpool, it’s Sol dream to take some of the crew around the star-studded film festival circuit. “It would be great to think we could take Mud’s young writing team to Hollywood – but we’d need a sponsor, or an angel, to give us those kind of wings!” says Sol.
