NWV Cannes Party
LIVERPOOL’S LIMELIGHT IN CANNES
THE international filmmaking industry has celebrated the success of Liverpool’s filmmaking heritage, at a glitzy showbiz party hosted by North West Vision in Cannes.
Billed as the Liverpool Plus event, over 150 of the industry’s finest partied until the small hours at The Grand Hotel event, organised to showcase the best of the region’s film offering.
Taking centre stage at the party was Liverpool’s Carl Hunter, originator and producer of Grow Your Own, a multi-million-pound film written by award-winning Liverpool writer, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and which is due to be released on June 15.
The 60th annual Cannes Film Festival, which runs until May 28, is widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious film festival. And in addition to hosting the Liverpool Plus Party, North West Vision, the strategic film, TV and digital media development agency for the Northwest, has manned a stand in the UK Pavillion since the festival began.
“At this year’s Festival there’s been an incredible interest in the region, particularly in Liverpool, as it approaches its Capital of Culture celebration,” says Alice Morrison, Chief Executive of North West Vision. “Hopefully we’ll get some solid business out of those leads.”
At the Liverpool Plus Party, however, all eyes were focussed on
what the city has already achieved. This year three fabulous
feature films have come out of Liverpool – Grow Your Own,
Sparkle, and Under The Mud.
“When Sparkle is released in the autumn it will be yet
another chance for Liverpool to shine, both on screen and behind
the scenes, as the film shows what an impressive and versatile
place Liverpool is to film in,” says Alice.
Director Solon Papadopoulos, of Hurricane Films, can lay testament
to that. Earlier this year his feature film, Under The Mud,
received its Merseyside premier at the city’s Philharmonic
Hall, having been shot and produced in the city.
A Granada TV film crew were also on hand at the Liverpool Plus
Party, making a documentary about the film’s success.
“It’s been a brilliant year for us, and it’s
especially great to see Liverpool here in strength at
Cannes,” says Sol.
